Once again, when harmony, experience, and mutual trust truly matter, a long-standing partnership makes all the difference. It was Daniel Bluman who claimed victory in the prestigious UF Health Grand Prix Qualifier CSI4* in Ocala, riding his longtime partner Gemma W to triumph in the spectacular setting of the World Equestrian Center in Ocala.

Forty of the best horse-and-rider combinations on the international scene, representing 13 nations, faced off on Thursday in the WEC Grand Arena in one of the most eagerly anticipated classes of the week, boasting a total prize fund of $117,000. The course was designed by Mexican course designer Anderson Lima, who presented a technical and selective track that challenged even the most experienced riders, particularly through the final two lines.

At the conclusion of the first round, only 12 combinations managed to qualify for the jump-off, underscoring the exceptionally high standard of the competition. “The course was difficult, but it had to be,” Bluman commented. “The level is extremely high, with so many top riders. It was the perfect track for this class.”

The jump-off quickly set a fast pace with Erynn Ballard entering first, followed by speedy attempts from Lauren Balcomb and Sloane Coles that were ultimately marred by faults. Momentum shifted when Belgian rider Pieter de Brabandere delivered a clear round in 34.00 seconds, raising the bar for all those still to come.

The crowd then witnessed a string of top-class performances: from Ballard’s second mount to the powerful acceleration of Aaron Vale, who stopped the clock at 33.65 seconds with Gray’s Inn to take the provisional lead. Shortly afterward, Jad Dana came close to stealing the spotlight with Itchcock Des Dames, finishing just 19 hundredths of a second off the fastest time.

Second to last to enter the arena, Bluman had the advantage of watching all his rivals before taking his turn. Buoyed by the excellent feeling he had already experienced in the first round, he chose not to alter his strategy: let Gemma W gallop, be quick through the turns, and trust his instinct. That decision paid off with a flawless and lightning-fast jump-off, completed in 33.21 seconds—a time no one could match.

“We’ve been together for almost ten years,” Bluman said of the nearly 15-year-old KWPN mare. “Horses change, but one thing has never changed: how much I believe in her. Gemma has an incredible heart and mind. Winning big classes with her again is something truly special.”

This victory is not only the result of an outstanding sporting performance, but also a powerful confirmation of how a solid partnership, built over time, can continue to deliver success at the very highest level of international show jumping.
