Cremona in Stars and Stripes

The Lombard city, traditionally known for its torrone (nougat) and the Torrazzo, has, in recent years, become Italy’s capital of Reining. 2025 will be no exception, and Cremona will once again host the Salone del Cavallo Americano (American Horse Show), scheduled from May 23 to 25. However, this spring, the city offers us an exciting preview of top-tier reining.
The Cremona Derby
Next week will be an exciting and action-packed one for all those who love reining, as well as for professionals, athletes, and the true stars of these events: the horses, particularly those of American origin. From March 24 to 29, the Cremona Fiere halls will transform into typical arenas of the American West for a thrilling showdown. This event is the IRHA-IRHBA-FISE-NRHA Derby, held concurrently with the 2024 Italian Debutants Championship Finals and the WRC Qualifications for 2025. This is an unmissable event, as the best Italian reiners, along with rising talents, will take to the arena for exciting Go rounds, ready to share their secrets and demonstrate their skills in this fascinating and challenging discipline.
A Focus on Young Talent
The Derby is a much-anticipated event for enthusiasts. It is a competition generally held among young horses, typically between the ages of 4 and 6. The Derby is one of the premier advanced-level reining events, and its tests may vary slightly from traditional competitions. The horses’ performances are judged based on their precision, speed, and the fluidity with which they execute typical reining maneuvers such as stops, spins, sliding stops, and circle work.
The main goal of the Derby is to highlight the abilities of young horses, giving them the chance to compete at higher levels while still emphasizing that they are in the development phase as reining horses.
An Unmissable Event
The IRHA-IRHBA-FISE-NRHA Derby is a significant event in the world of reining in Italy. It is held with the participation of the key federations and associations involved in the discipline, including the IRHA (Italian Reining Horse Association), the IRHBA (Italian Reining Horse Breeders Association), FISE (Federazione Italiana Sport Equestri), and NRHA (National Reining Horse Association).
This derby takes place alongside the 2024 Italian Debutants Championship Finals and the WRC (World Reining Championship) 2025 qualifications, making it highly relevant for both experienced riders and emerging talents. The Italian Debutants Championship Finals provide an ideal platform for young riders and horses making their way into more advanced competitions, while the WRC 2025 qualifications offer an opportunity to step onto the international stage.
Overall, the IRHA-IRHBA-FISE-NRHA Derby is a highly competitive event that brings together varying levels of expertise and skill, and serves as an important showcase for reining in Italy, drawing top-level participants and passionate enthusiasts.
So, let’s all head to Cremona to fill the stands and cheer on our two- and four-legged heroes!
