The first of a total of five LONGINES World Ranking jumping competitions was the highlight of the day this Friday (01/02/2019) from 4pm on the CSI5* International Show Jumping programme at the GLOCK HORSE PERFORMANCE CENTER Austria. With prize money totalling 62,000 euros and a maximum height of 1.50 m, this 5-star jumping competition presented the first great challenge of this weekend.

Forty-five of the best show jumping riders in the world came to the starting line in the CSI5* GLOCK’s Perfection Tour. Twelve duos executed immaculate basic rounds to qualify for the subsequent jump-off. The shortened jump-off course extended over 320 m, including eight jumps, and had to be completed in a maximum of 55 seconds, if possible with no penalties, in order to avoid collecting time penalties and to have a shot at the generous winner’s prize of 15,500 euros.

Number six in the world, Daniel Deusser (GER), the first to start in the jump-off in the saddle on Calisto Blue, laid down a superb time of 38.18, ultimately enough for second place. Olympic silver medallist, World and European Champion Jur Vrieling (NED), riding VDL Glasgow vd Merelsnest N.O.P., showed that it was indeed possible to go a bit faster, and took a convincing victory in 38.16 seconds. “There are really good riders here. Glasgow has just had two months off and of course I hope we might just win another competition or two this weekend”, said a beaming Jur Vrieling at the official awards ceremony.
In third place was Wilm Vermeir from Belgium who, with Iq van het Steentje, completed a second clear round in 39.73 seconds.
The best Austrian in this LONGINES Ranking competition, who recently took sixth place in the 2018 World Equestrian Games in Tryon, was Max Kühner (T). As number one of the Top of Austria, he had saddled up 14-year-old Cornet Kalua, son of Cornet Obolensky, and achieved an outstanding fourth place (0/40.73).

04 CSI5* GLOCK’s OPENING COMPETITION – 1m45
5-Star kick-off victory for Emanuele Gaudiano (ITA)
Twenty-eight riders from among the top 100 in the world have come to start at the GLOCK HORSE PERFORMANCE CENTER Austria and, at 11:45am, the Olympic winners, World and European Champions along with top international riders in attendance first sized up against each other in a standard competition over 1.45 m. Forty-one participating duos had entered in the starting list for this CSI5* GLOCK’s Opening Competition. The task was to overcome 12 obstacles, including two mighty double combinations, without penalties and within the permitted time of 79 seconds, and 12 rider-horse duos mastered this task with clear rounds.

Ultimately the winner was the number 42 in the world, Emanuele Gaudiano (ITA), well known for riding fast rounds. With starting number 39 and on the saddle on 12-year-old Quinn van de Heffinck, daughter of For Pleasure, he rode to victory in an unbeatable 61.04 seconds. “I always look forward so much to coming here, because the conditions for riders and horses are simply perfect. The fact that this year sees the first 5-star tournament in the hall is fantastic, of course”, said the beaming winner in his interview.

Occupying second place was Michael Jung, a multiple Olympic winner, World and European Champion, albeit in another discipline. Because Jung is one of the most successful eventing riders in the world. Nevertheless, this German world-class rider has also enjoyed success in international show jumping and dressage competitions. In the saddle on his Westphalian mare, fischerChelsea, he cantered penalty-free over the finishing line in 61.89 seconds at the GLOCK HORSE PERFORMANCE CENTER.

The world number 69, Malin Baryard-Johnsson (SWE), showed her class in this CSI5* GLOCK’s Opening Competition over 1.45 m and took an outstanding third place with H&M Second Chance in a penalty-free 63.62 seconds.

Very promising! Go to Fortuna wins the GLOCK’s Youngster Tour under Bertram Allen (IRL)
Twelve obstacles with 13 jumps over 1.35 to 1.40 m, a course extending over 450 m and a permitted time of 78 seconds. This was the task facing a total of 26 youngster horses in the GLOCK’s Youngster Tour. Seven seven-year-old and 19 eight-year-old future equine hopes had been nominated for this competition by their riders, with a view to their collecting tournament experience at the highest level.

Victory in the GLOCK’s Youngster Tour went to the eight-year-old KWPN gelding, Go to Fortuna (Eldorado van de Zeshoek x Vancouver), presented by Ireland’s young star, Bertram Allen. This duo rode magnificently to the finish in 60.85 seconds.
Just as magnificently, but 2.35 seconds more slowly, the just seven-year-old stallion, My Surprise-K van’t Kattenheye (Clinton x Avontuur), and Denis Nielsen (GER) dealt with the task.

The third-placed, eight-year-old mare, Novita Jovial Z (Nabab de Reve x Carthago Z), also made a promising impression under Laura Renwick (GBR) and, in a penalty-free 63.32 seconds, took third place in the kick-off to the GLOCK’s Youngster Tour.
