Avantea OneStep: the new standard for equine embryo thawing
Avantea has recently expanded its portfolio of equine reproduction technologies with the introduction of Avantea OneStep, an innovative method designed to simplify and standardize embryo thawing. This crucial stage in the embryo transfer process has been re-engineered to be faster and safer, while maintaining the high scientific and regulatory standards that define the company.
An evolution beyond traditional techniques
Until now, veterinarians have primarily relied on two approaches, each with inherent limitations:
- Traditional multi-step thawing: Reliable and compliant, but complex and requiring approximately 30 minutes per embryo.
- Vitrification: Rapid (5–10 minutes), but highly operator-dependent and often non-compliant with commercialization regulations due to the use of “open” systems.
Avantea OneStep represents an “advanced synthesis”: a rapid yet controlled approach that overcomes the complexity of traditional methods and the biological risks associated with vitrification.
The advantages of the “One Step” technique
The true innovation lies in its operational simplicity. The procedure involves a single step in a single medium (embryo holding medium), completing the thawing process in just 5–10 minutes. Key benefits include:
- Ease of handling and standardization: The technique is far less sensitive to critical timing (unlike vitrification) and significantly reduces embryo manipulation.
- Regulatory compliance: As a closed system, it fully complies with current legislation governing embryo commercialization.
- Efficiency for veterinarians: Reduced working time enables better planning and management of daily field activities.
Clinical results and availability
The method’s validity is supported by data: integrated into Avantea protocols since May 2025, it has already recorded hundreds of transfers with a consistent pregnancy rate in line with traditional methods. Based on these results, from May 1st, 2026, OneStep will become the standard for all embryos produced by Avantea.
To support professionals, Avantea provides the OneStep thawing kit to its clients. It is important to note that, as embryos frozen using both the traditional method (requiring multiple sequential steps) and the OneStep method will coexist, it will be essential to use the specific thawing protocol indicated for each individual embryo.
Distinguishing between the two methods is straightforward and based on embryo packaging: clear transparent straws for the traditional method, and yellow straws in yellow goblets for OneStep.
With OneStep, Avantea goes beyond simplifying a technical step—it advances the entire reproductive process, offering a solution that ensures operational efficiency, biological safety, and process repeatability.
