It was a bittersweet night for show jumping fans at the Washington International, as they saw one of the sport’s best names in his final competition.  HH Carlos Z, ridden by McLain Ward, went out on top with victory in the International Jumper Speed Final, finishing in 57.77 seconds. It was the iconic gelding’s farewell, since when the pair entered the arena for their award ceremony, it was announced that Carlos would retire. The 15-year-old Zangersheide owned by Double H Farm won a lot with McLain Ward for the US Team in the last three years. That’s why there was a standing ovation for a tremendous career that included more than forty FEI wins on two continents and more than a dozen Nations Cup teams. The most important achievements came in 2014, with the five-star win in Wellington and the World Cup Final in Washington. photo: McLain Ward rode HH Carlos Z to one final victory on Friday night, winning the $50,000 International Jumper Speed Final before announcing the gelding’s retirement.
