Kevin McCarthy Ends 2021 With a Victory at World Equestrian Center – Wilmington Winter III

Kevin McCarthy (IRL) wrapped up the 2021 show season with the top prize in the $30,000 World Equestrian Center Grand Prix during the Winter III Show at World Equestrian Center – Wilmington on Saturday, December 18, 2021. This was the second grand prix victory in a row for McCarthy and his own 11-year-old Swedish Warmblood mare.
Bobby Murphy designed a technical track for the 17 horse-and-rider combinations that entered the class, and eight competitors cleared the first round to return for the jump-off. McCarthy and Catch a Star HSS crossed the timers at 34.141 seconds to take the lead by just over one second. The winners of the $10,000 Welcome Stake on Thursday, Genevieve Munson and Contendro Star, earned a second-place finish in the class. Charlotte Clark and Kinsella took home third place.
“Tonight was a very special win for me,” explained McCarthy. “My family back home in Ireland was watching the live feed and it was great to catch a win for my dad and family. I knew going into the class that we had to give it our all because we were up against some other great riders and horses. We can’t wait to be back in January. In the meantime, I plan to keep my horse fit and happy.”
