KWPN Stallion Show 2026: Vivaldi was honoured as Dressage Horse of the Year 2025
From 28 to 31 January 2026, the Brabanthallen in ’s-Hertogenbosch once again became the beating heart of Dutch sport horse breeding and equestrian sport for the KWPN Stallion Show 2026. It was in this setting, during the traditional gala evening, that one of the most heartfelt tributes of the edition was paid: Vivaldi was honoured as Dressage Horse of the Year 2025.
A distinction carrying strong symbolic weight, as it was awarded posthumously. Vivaldi, who passed away on 21 October 2025 at the age of 23, remains a living presence in international dressage through his offspring and his enduring genetic legacy.
The chestnut stallion (Krack C x Jazz) was for many years a true benchmark in global dressage breeding. Bred by Antoon Versantvoort in Sint-Oedenrode, the Netherlands, Vivaldi stood out not only for the quality of his movement, but also for his temperament and balance—traits that are more sought after than ever today.
The facts speak for themselves: more than 60 offspring competing at Grand Prix level and a strong, recognisable sire line that has spread far beyond Dutch borders. Fittingly, during the award ceremony it was two of his most famous sons, Desperado and Dream Boy, who represented him in the arena.
The Horse of the Year title was decided by public vote, with over 4,000 preferences cast and a clear majority in favour of Vivaldi. A figure that highlights how this stallion won the admiration not only of breeders and riders, but also of the wider equestrian public.
“It is difficult to watch a competition without finding Vivaldi somewhere in the pedigree,” was remarked during the ceremony—an observation that perfectly encapsulates his legacy. Vivaldi was not merely an outstanding sire, but a true architect of the future of modern dressage.
An award that transcends competition and becomes memory, gratitude and respect. Because certain horses, even after they are gone, continue to teach us.
