BROMONT, QC – June 5, 2025 – Lauren Nicholson and Larcot Z, owned by Jacqueline Mars, currently top the leaderboard in the CCI4*-L at the MARS Bromont CCI after posting an impressive dressage score of 27.1

Nicholson first brought the now 12-year-old Zangersheide gelding to Bromont two years ago, early in their partnership. This year, their connection has matured, and the results are showing.

“I absolutely love Bromont—it’s always such a well-run event,” Nicholson shared. “The courses are world-class and really prepare you for international competition. The cross-country is always a proper test, and the setting is just stunning. I’m excited to take him around this weekend.”

Larcot Z was previously campaigned by Reagan Lafleur and Will Coleman before Nicholson took over the ride. She emphasizes the importance of time in building a true partnership.

“I always say it takes about two years to really click with a new horse,” she explained. “This season, it feels like we’re finally there. I’m hopeful he’ll handle the course well and have a solid run.”

Following Nicholson in the CCI4*-L standings are Australian rider Ema Klugman in second and third aboard Chiraz (30.0) and RF Redfern (30.6), with Canadian Olympian Jessica Phoenix in fourth on Aeronautics (32.3).

MARS Bromont Rising Participants Begin Their Journey

Thursday also marked the start of competition for MARS Bromont Rising athletes in the U25 CCI2*-L and CCI3*-L divisions. Riders benefited from dressage coaching and warm-up support from German Olympian Bettina Hoy, and walked the cross-country course with her on Thursday afternoon. On Friday, they’ll receive additional insights from renowned course designer Derek di Grazia.

“They all worked really hard,” Hoy noted. “Many were able to implement the tips from our sessions. When stepping in as a last-minute coach, you need to tread lightly. It can make a big positive difference—or not—so it’s about striking the right balance.”

Among those making the most of the opportunity was Kelsey Seidel and Chico’s Man VDF Z, now leading the U25 CCI2*-L with a 29.2. Seidel, who trains with CCI5* rider Sara Kozumplik, credited both Kozumplik and Hoy for the performance.

“‘Sprout’ really rose to the occasion today,” Seidel said. “He had a little playful buck in the medium canter—that’s just who he is—but he truly loves his job. I wouldn’t want him any other way.”

Seidel also shared her motivation for attending: “Last year I came for Little Bromont to get a feel for the venue. That’s when I learned about the Bromont Rising Program and made it a goal. We structured our season around being here as prep for Young Riders at the end of the month.”

Ivie Cullen-Dean Leads U25 CCI3*-L

With a score of 34.6, Ivie Cullen-Dean and Fernhill Cardavega lead the U25 CCI3*-L. Though not a Bromont Rising grant recipient this year, Cullen-Dean was still invited to take part in the program’s activities.

“I was surprised by how well he went,” she said. “He can be a bit spooky, but he stayed focused and gave me an error-free test. He’s definitely fit and ready, and I’m just thrilled with him.”

Boyd Martin Leads CCI3*-L

World #5 Boyd Martin currently leads the CCI3*-L aboard Fetiche Des Rouges, scoring 29.9. The French-bred horse is a newer addition to Martin’s program and was previously ridden at this level by British Olympian Laura Collett.

“He’s coming along great,” Martin said. “This is one of the tougher long formats in North America, right up there with Morven Park. But that’s why we come here—it’s a serious test and a great way to develop future five-star horses.”

Martin praised the venue: “Bromont is just a special place. Great town, fantastic people, and top-tier facilities. The terrain and the jumps here really prepare horses for the next level.”

CCI2-L Leaderboard: Alexandra Knowles Sets the Pace*

In the CCI2*-L, Alexandra Knowles of Lexington, KY, holds the lead with September Venture, owned by Katherine O’Brien. The pair earned a 28.0 heading into the next phase.

What’s Ahead

Friday will see the conclusion of dressage for the CCI2*-L and CCI3*-L divisions, along with all dressage rides in the CCI4*-S. A free livestream of all competition is available on the Bromont YouTube channel, RNS Video Media, and ClipMyHorse.TV.

Also featured on Friday and Saturday evening is the highly anticipated RCMP Musical Ride, preceded by a performance from Sarah Gibault, liberty trainer and former star of Cavalia. Gibault’s show begins at approximately 5:15 p.m., followed by the Musical Ride. All shows and competitions are free and family-friendly, including parking.
