The opening day of the Longines Masters in New York has closed under the domination of the American riders. The stage in New York is the grand finale of the current season that this year presented the novelty of the Riders Masters Cup, in which two teams selected representing Europe and USA will compete in a direct 1 on 1 clash in the most revolutionary competitive format of this discipline.
Leading the two teams to the Riders Masters Cup are two of the most titled coaches in the world: the American Robert Ridland and the Swiss Philippe Guerdatche who have selected their teams: the US Team will be composed by the godmother of the Longines Masters of New York Georgina Bloomberg in addition to McLain Ward, Adrienne Sternlicht, Laura Kraut, fresh of winning the Fei World Cup title.
Among the Europeans chosen by Guerdat are the Olympic champion with France in Rio 2016 Kevin Staut, Olivier Philippaerts, Gregory Wathelet, PEder Fredricson and Harrie Smolders.
The two teams had already faced each other in a first match-up in Paris in which the European riders including Italy’s Lorenzo De Luca had the upper hand, the one in New York is the final act of a new challenge among the most exciting events of the tournament, like the fast Longines Speed Challenge that will take place tonight (New York time) and will be broadcast live tomorrow morning from 10.00 (Italian time), on Eurosport.
The Masters One Vestrum-Italy trophy has already given a clear indication of who is in form, with McLain Ward definitely among these, the American was uncatchable in the 1.45m with HH Callas, an 11-year-old Jumper from the HH Farm and despite being chased hard by Belgian Olivier Philippaerts with Goofy vanT Laerhof, the 24-year-old had to settle for second place to an impressive Ward who devoured the course in 58.62 seconds (against the 60.12 by the Belgian).
With the third place on Cornwall BH the British rider Amanda Derbyshire is a candidate to be the surprise of this stage.
Another victory coming from the American continent was that of Venezuelan Alejandro Karolyi, triumphant in the saddle of Emillion in the 1.45 the Masters Two Grand Prix Magazine.
Another potential surprise of this stage could be the American Coco Fath, just 17 years old is the second classified in this category with Huckleberry in front of Samantha Wight with Edison.
A native of Long Isand who is hosting this event, scored victory in the Masters Two L.A. Saddlery where Laura Bowery with Zerly WHO overcame the competition of compatriot Jennifer Kocher and Canadian Mario Deslauriers.
There are also youth and amateur categories that have opened the first day of competition, and even here we have seen well-known names in the international equestrian scene such as Alexa Pessoa, a native of Connecticut and pupil of the 2004 Olympic champion Rodrigo Pessoa, who claimed victory in the very first competition of the Longines Masters NY, the Masters Three Kastel Denmark, riding Little Rock.
