Luis Fernando Larrazabal and Baroness open WEF 2026 with a victory in the Adequan Challenge Cup

Wellington, Florida – January 17, 2026 – A flawless start to the season for Venezuelan rider Luis Fernando Larrazabal, who on Friday, January 16, claimed victory in the $32,000 Adequan® WEF Challenge Cup Round 2 at Wellington International, during the prestigious Winter Equestrian Festival 2026.

Riding the 11-year-old Westphalian mare Baroness (Balous Bellini x Polydor), Larrazabal secured his second international win in just two days, following his success on Thursday in the Bainbridge Companies 1.40m Two-Phase. A result that confirms the excellent form of the partnership, owned by Leeann Ablin.

The course designed by Olaf Petersen Jr. proved selective, narrowing the field down to seven combinations for the jump-off. First to return to the arena, Larrazabal immediately set a decisive pace, stopping the clock at 38.19 seconds—a time that earned him the win.

Close behind him was Lillie Keenan (USA) aboard Kick On, who finished second in 38.57 seconds, while third place went to fellow American Alexandra Worthington riding De l’Oiseliere.

“I’ve been riding this mare since she was six years old and I know her perfectly,” Larrazabal commented. “After a five-week break, starting like this is the best possible way to begin the season.”

The Venezuelan rider also highlighted the importance of the horse’s welfare and a calmer mental approach to competition—key factors that have enabled him to collect numerous international podium finishes in recent months.
