CSI5* GASTON GLOCK’s CHAMPIONAT – 1m55 – 2 rounds – Competition counts for the LONGINES Ranking
Malin Baryard-Johnsson (SWE) wins the CSI5* Gaston Glock’s Championat 2019
There was a guarantee of much excitement today because, in the CSI5* Gaston Glock’s Championat of this GLOCK’s 5-star Season Opening at the GHPC Austria, it wasn’t only about important points for the World Ranking list of show jumpers: a prize purse totalling 94,000 euros made victory in this jumping test over 1.55 m the most desirable of objectives for the 45 nominated contestants. Not only the dynamics of the line to be followed and the dimensions of this selective competition over two rounds but also the names of the riders and horses on the list of starters underlined the value of what was at stake.
“The level in this category is naturally very high, and the course is correspondingly challenging”, commented Olympic silver medallist, World and European Champion GLOCK Rider Gerco Schröder after viewing the course. “The obstacles follow in rapid sequence and leave scarcely any room for error or irregularity.”
The trick of gaining a much coveted “double-zero” was achieved by 14 duos, and eleven could then progress to contest the top prize of 23,500 euros in the winning round. The excited spectators did not have to wait long for the first clear round of this shortened course, because Austria’s number one, Max Kühner (T), riding Alfa Jordan, completed a dream round in 40.61 seconds. It was a performance that ultimately achieved fourth place.
However in this CSI5* Gaston Glock’s Championat the last starter, Malin Baryard-Johnsson from Sweden, found the most successful mix of rhythm, speed and tight turns. The silver-medallist in the 2004 Olympic Games and team silver-medallist in the World Equestrian Games 2018 crossed the finishing line on H&M Indiana in 39.21 seconds, thus making herself the well deserved Gaston Glock’s Championesse 2019. “I got the turns in the second round just right and I guess this was what was decisive in the end. I am really very proud of my horse”, said the beaming female rider, revealing that she will also saddle H&M Indiana tomorrow in the GLOCK’s 5* Grand Prix with prize money totalling 344,000 euros.
Thirty-six-year-old British rider Robert Whitaker and his ten-year-old stallion El Wee Widge proved themselves by coming second (0/39.60) and third place went to the number 36 in the world, Olivier Philippaerts (BEL) who, with H&M Cue Channa 42, also remained penalty-free (0/40.07).

06 CSI5* GLOCK’s PERFECTION TOUR – 1m50 – Two phases
Lynch made it! Victory in the CSI5* GLOCK’s Perfection Tour
Day two (02/02) of International Show Jumping at the GLOCK HORSE PERFORMANCE CENTER Austria began on schedule at 8:15am with the CSI5* GLOCK’s Perfection Tour, with 30 rider-horse duos ready to start. The competition over 1.50 m was organised as an international 2-phase jumping test, in which those riders with a penalty-free first phase moved on directly to tackle the six obstacles in the second phase.
It was a smooth and, above all, fast round that Denis Lynch (IRL) rode today. His 12-year-old KWPN mare, Pretty Little Liar, was a congenial partner under the saddle and the time of 34.07 seconds delivered victory in this 2-phase competition over 1.50 m. “It’s wonderful to be here, we’ve dined so well, had some wonderful experiences and now winning too – that’s super”, so moved was Denis Lynch by star-chef Alfons Schuhbeck’s cuisine, the sport and that GLOCK ambiance at the morning’s award ceremony.
Totally happy too was GLOCK Rider Gerco Schröder. The Dutch rider had aimed for a fast time right from the start, with his 11-year-old GLOCK’s Dobelensky, son of Cornet-Obolensky, jumping smoothly on, yielding second place for the GLOCK Duo in 34.79 seconds.
Occupying third place was Jur Vrieling (NED), the winner of yesterday’s GLOCK’s Perfection Tour (Friday, 01/02/2019). For this 2-phase competition, the Dutch rider had saddled up his nine-year-old DSP gelding, KM Chalcedon, and also remained penalty-free in both phases (0/35.82).

For 42 duos starting in the GLOCK’s 2* Tour today (Saturday, 02/02/2019), ahead lay an accumulator with joker over 1.40 m and prize money totalling 10,500 euros. Those who remained penalty-free were to gain a total of 65 points, which was achieved by 17 duos.
Victory in a time of 45.03 seconds went to just 16-year-old Lily Freeman-Attwood, who has already gained plenty of experience in international arenas, achieving a silver medal at the Pony European Championships 2017 and success in the 2016 European Children Championships (individual 7th place and team 4th place). “It’s such an unbelievably fantastic tournament here. My horse jumped superbly. He’s simply my best teacher and I’m so grateful for this horse”, said the beaming young British rider at the official award ceremony.
This was the first time this 16-year-old had come to start at the GLOCK HORSE PERFORMANCE CENTER Austria, and she saddled up her nine-year-old Belgian gelding Karibou Horta. With her magnificent performance, she pushed Benjamin Wulschner (GER), riding his 12-year-old Oldenburg mare, Bangkok Girl PP, into second place (65 points/45.29).
Taking third place was the winner of Friday’s GLOCK’s CSI2* Tour, Willi Fischer. This rider from Upper Austria, with his experienced Holstein, Colmar 2, cantered over the line penalty-free in 46.78 seconds.
