Esposende, Portugal – September 8, 2025 — The first week of the Late Summer Equestrian Festival in Esposende concluded with thrilling victories for Portuguese riders on both Saturday and Sunday, as the event welcomed an international field of competitors to Portugal’s Atlantic coast.

On Sunday, the spotlight was on the CSI2* Grand Prix, where João Marquilhas (POR) and his mare Eureka du Vernay delivered two brilliant clear rounds to take the win. Marquilhas clinched the title with a decisive 38.03-second jump-off, securing the top share of the €25,000 prize fund. Reflecting on his victory, Marquilhas said: “It was a very technical course, so I knew I had to stay focused. I was lucky to be one of the last riders to go in the jump-off, which gave me time to make a good plan and a winning strategy. I’m very happy that it all worked out.”

The first week of the festival welcomed over 180 riders representing nine nations, including Portugal, Ireland, Brazil, Sweden, Belgium, Spain, Switzerland, Finland, and France. Among the international voices, Finnish rider Erika Hanhisuanto shared her appreciation for the venue: “I love coming here — this is already my third time at this show. It’s a great facility with good footing, and what makes it unique is the possibility for horses to relax. With the river so close, riders can hack out and even go in the water, which is fantastic for the horses’ well-being.”

The owners of the club are very hard-working people, and I hope I can repeat last year’s success in one of the Grand Prix events.” His words carried weight after a dominant opening week in which he secured three class victories, setting the stage for an exciting second week.
