Seamus Hughes Kennedy: A Name You Can’t Miss

Making his debute at the European Championships in A Coruña with a 5th place finish
At just 22, Seamus Hughes Kennedy is quickly becoming one of Ireland’s most exciting names in international show jumping. Speaking with us during the European Championships in A Coruña, Seamus reflected on a season of milestones, standout performances, and what it’s like to compete on the biggest stage alongside his remarkable horse, ESI Rocky.
“The Europeans were always the goal”
Looking back on the year so far, Seamus shared that making it to the Europeans was something he had quietly been aiming for.
“It’s been a great year so far. I remember in Geneva last year, when I got into the five-star and was able to jump there with the Young Rider Academy — that was always in the back of my mind. I really wanted to gear up for the Europeans. That was the big goal.”
The year kicked off at the Sunshine Tour, where strong placings in four-star Grand Prix classes helped put him on the selectors’ radar. From there, things escalated fast.
“Rome was our first five-star Grand Prix, and to go double clear there was incredible. Then we went on to La Baule and won the Nations Cup — that was a real highlight. Those results were what got us selected for the Europeans.”

A natural step forward
For many riders, the leap into five-star competition can be overwhelming. But Seamus has taken it in stride — focusing on consistency, and making smart decisions with his team and horse.
“We’ve just tried to stick to what’s always worked for us, but tighten things up a bit — find those one-percent gains and take everything a bit more seriously.”
Having a horse like Rocky has certainly helped make the transition smoother.
“He’s got so much scope and talent, so stepping up hasn’t been too difficult for him. He actually makes it a lot easier on me.”
Rocky: “He’s naughty, but in a good way”
There’s a clear bond between Seamus and Rocky, a horse he’s brought along since he was three.
“He’s only ten now, still young at this level. But we’ve had him for years, and I’ve been riding him for most of that time. He’s got so much blood, scope, and he’s really careful — everything you want in a top horse.”

And in the stable?
“He’s a bit spoiled, to be honest. He’ll be looking for polos or carrots, and when you run out, he’ll throw his ears back and try to nip you for more. He’s naughty, but in a good way.”
Eyes on the Horizon
With a strong showing at the Europeans, attention now turns to what’s coming up.
“There’s a lot I’d love to do after this week, but first we have to get home, see how Rocky feels, and take it from there. I’d love to get into Dublin this year. And someday, I’ve always wanted to give Spruce Meadows a go — that’s always been a dream.”
Looking further ahead, the World Championships are firmly on the horizon.
“If everything goes according to plan, I’d love to make my WEG debut next year. Aachen and the World Championships — that’s the big goal.”
Bringing up the next generation
Alongside his international riding, Seamus is also heavily involved in breeding and producing young horses at home.
“We’ve got some lovely young horses coming up, especially from my mare, Cuffesgrange Cavadora. She’s bred some really nice ones. They’re all still very young, so we’re just trying to bring them along slowly and do things the right way.”

Safety in a fast-paced sport
With the top levels of the sport demanding more precision and speed than ever, safety remains a big priority.
“Everything’s so fast now — connected distances, tight time allowed. Anything can happen, even a little stumble. That’s why good safety gear is essential.”
Seamus has partnered with helmet brand KEP Italia to ensure he’s protected, even when pushing the limits.
“They’ve been great to work with — super comfortable helmets, and always reliable. Hopefully we don’t have to test them, but it’s good to know they’re there if we need them.”
With a humble attitude, a world-class horse, and a string of top results already behind him, Seamus Hughes Kennedy is clearly just getting started. As he continues to climb the ranks, all eyes will be on what he and Rocky do next — and the future is looking very bright indeed.
“We’re just trying to keep it all going. Take it one day at a time.”
