The curtain has risen on the Longines Global Champions Tour 2018 season, in Mexico City, with Spaniard Eduardo Alvarez Aznar coming out top in the opening round.
The vibrant Mexican capital has welcomed, as last year, some of the most illustrious names in international showjumping to the Campo Marte arena, which in 1968 hosted the Olympic jumping and dressage competitions.
A total of 57 pairs were present at the start of the classic on Thursday, the first to conclude the course without errors was the Egyptian Abdel said on Jumpy van de Hermitage, who had been in brilliant form as a Under25 representative in the Global Champions League, and Megane Moissonnier on Unours Batilly who scored a fast lap in 63.55 which earned him the head of the standings.
There were plenty of those making their debut, like Carquilot presented by the Mexican Nicolas Pizarro and Teavanta II C Z mounted by the French Simon Delestre, but above all a horse that aroused a lot of attention, the 11 year-old under the saddle of Pius Schwizer, Balou Rubin R.
At the end of the competition the victory went to the Spanish Aznar on 13 Fidux, ahead by 2.62 seconds on the previous leader of the temporary ranking Shane Breen, the Irish rider was on the talented 10 year-old CSF Sell (Ars Vivendi).
