Andrea Calabro: Passion, Hard Work, and the Dream of an Italian Rider

Andrea Calabro, a rising star in the world of Italian show jumping, has turned a passion deeply rooted in his family into a successful international career. Growing up in a household immersed in equestrian excellence, Andrea followed in the footsteps of his father, a professional rider, and his mother, carving his own path to compete at the highest levels of the sport.
“My passion for show jumping definitely comes from my parents,” Andrea shares. “My father, a professional rider, competed in Nations Cups and 5-star events, including here in Verona. I started with ponies, and thanks to my parents’ professionalism and support, I reached the big leagues.”
Early Success and Transition to the Senior Ranks
From a young age, Andrea’s talent and determination were evident. As part of the Italian team, he achieved significant results early in his career.
“As a Young Rider, I participated in and won several Nations Cups with the Italian team,” he recalls. “From there, I gradually transitioned to the senior level, earning a bronze medal at the Italian Absolute Championship and competing in my first Grand Prix in Rome.”
Andrea describes the experience of riding in the Rolex Grand Prix of Rome as a career highlight.
“It’s the dream of every Italian rider,” he says. “Standing among the best in the world at such an iconic venue is an unforgettable experience.”

A Life Between Italy and the Netherlands
Andrea’s career has taken him beyond Italy, with a base in the Netherlands, where he manages his own stables near Deurne, in the heart of Europe’s equestrian scene.
“My father and family live in Florence, where they run the Circolo Ippico Toscano,” he explains. “I chose to set up my stables in the Netherlands because of the incredible opportunities it offers, both for international competitions and for the horse market.”
The Netherlands’ reputation as an equestrian hub provides Andrea with access to top competitions and a dynamic marketplace for sourcing and selling horses.
“It’s an ideal location for scouting talented young horses and giving them the exposure they need to grow,” Andrea adds. “It’s also a central point for traveling to major shows across Europe.”

Daily Life and Building Bonds with Horses
Andrea’s typical day revolves around his horses.
“I’m up at seven and in the stables by 7:30,” he shares. “I ride five or six horses in the morning, and then a couple more in the afternoon. I always try to make sure my horses get plenty of time to relax—whether it’s going for a jog, spending time in the paddock, or even walking in the forest.”
For Andrea, the relationship with his horses goes beyond training and competing. One horse, in particular, holds a special place in his heart.
“That’s Me has given me some of the biggest emotions in this sport,” he says with a smile. “He’s like a brother, a partner, and a friend. When we enter the ring, we fight together, but we also enjoy spending time together outside of competition.”

Future Goals and Aspirations
Andrea’s ambitions reflect his passion for the sport and his desire to continue growing.
“My goal is to keep improving as a rider, stay at a high level, and expand my string of horses to compete in more top-level events,” he explains. “With the support of my team and our owners, I’m confident we’ll achieve this in the coming months and years.”
Andrea’s approach is a mix of determination and respect for his horses.
“I believe in taking things step by step,” he says. “Each horse has its own potential, and it’s important to work with that in mind. My dream is to keep competing in events like the Rolex Grand Prix in Rome and to represent Italy on the biggest stages.”
A Promising Path Forward
From his roots in Florence to his base in the Netherlands, Andrea Calabro embodies the dedication and passion needed to excel in the demanding world of show jumping. With his eyes set on future success, he continues to inspire with his talent, hard work, and deep bond with his horses.
