Discovering human values through trekking
Horse trekking is as much about spirit and endeavour as it is about enjoyment. This is the claim made by Mauro Ferraris, the editor of a new magazine, Alpitrek, who along with a group known as the “riders in the sky“ have started tours to glaciers and through deserts. From the Khandar Mountains to the Russian steppes and through the Mexican sierras these are more journeys of discovery and a learning path on how to live at one in a natural wilderness where nothing goes to waste. These extraordinary trips were carried out with those who shared the same dream and with an extraordinary companion: the horse.Ferraris recalled a trek in the range occupied by the Lakota tribe of South Dakota where he revealed that the trip taught him so much.He said: “I learned about values, respect, how to make tools, clothes.“On his return to Italy, he took off into the Alps bringing with him what he had learned from the prairie. He said: “Nothing is ever wasted and in order to open a shop you must become an artisan, to make things with your hands.“Trading is a mutual gift, it is the base for sincere human relationships. If you are open then you will never have problems with anyone. I have experienced it many times when I have met Bedouins, Cossaks, Pashtoun and the American Indian.“
