Between 1870 and 1880 Eadweard Muybridge cemented his reputation as a photographypioneer, taking photos of a horse in various stages of movement, from trottingto full gallop. By doing so, he also showed that in certain moments all fourlimbs of the animal were off the ground. The sequence of photos became known as“The Horse in motion“. It was groundbreaking as the paintings of theera never captured this notion that all four hooves were off the ground.Muybridge managed to achieve this by installing 24 cameras along a track witheach shutter triggered by a thread as the horse passed by.
