Killer Algae: protests following the death of a horse
Protests in Brittany after the death of a horse due to asphyxiation caused by a algae. The horse had wondered into a area covered with the particular algae around Saint-Michel-en-Greve, in the bay of Lannion, and dropped dead in just a few seconds.Even the rider, Vincent Petit, risked losing his life and was saved by some passers by after having lost consciousness. According to a doctor who lives in the area the algae can be fatal ‘in certain circumstances and especially when they are in a state of decomposition’. The rider is now looking to sue for damages and also led a protest of hundreds of people onto the beach of the small French village. The local council has defended itself and has also accused the local industries and farmers of being responsible for the algae thanks to the waste they produce which causes the pollution of the water.
