The organising committee of the Mediterranean Equestrian Tour in Oliva Nova, Spain, would like to provide an update on the situation at the Centro Ecuestre Oliva Nova following the confirmed cases of EHV-1 that occurred during Spring MET II 2023.

The situation at the venue is under control. Since February 28, 2023, at 6 PM, there have been no febrile horses at the venue and none of the horses have showed neurological signs. There are currently 56 horses at the venue, which have been divided into different groups depending on their health status. Per March 3, 46 of these horses have returned negative tests, while five have returned positive tests and five are inconclusive.

Ten horses, without significant clinical symptoms, have since the cancellation of Spring MET II on February 22 been moved to the University Equine Hospital in Valencia (CEU) for prevention and close monitoring. Furthermore, two horses out of a group of six returning from Oliva Nova to Limburg, the Netherlands, have tested positive for EHV-1 and have been placed in quarantine where they are being closely monitored.

The horses currently remaining at the venue will start departing for their home stables when the FEI and the Federal Veterinary Authority’s strict testing requirements have been fulfilled. Fourteen of them have already received a green light to leave the venue, after returning negative tests as per the requirements.

Considering the development at the venue, the MET organising committee is confident that Spring MET IV – scheduled from April 4-23 2023 – can go ahead as planned.
