The first big show jumping event of 2015, the CSI5* Basle, begins on Thursday and will be hosted at the St.Jakobshalle. Ahead of the event, let’s take a look at the stars that are going to be present.
One of these is Australia’s Edwina Tops-Alexander, who is on the back of a World Cup GP win in Doha and one of the most in form lady-riders along with the French horsewoman Penelope Lèprevost. The latter meanwhile is the only female rider in the top-10 of the Longines ranking list and will be taking part in Switzerland along with Flora de Mariposa, who at the last World Equestrian Games in Normandy impressed the French public with her performances.
Amongst the riders taking part, there is also the winner of the last stage of the FEI World Cup: the vice world-champion for the team event Simon Delestre. France will also be represented by the European Champion Roger-Yves Bost and Kevin Staut.
Belgium meanwhile have these riders at the event: Pieter Devos, Nicola & Olivier Philippaerts, Constant van Paesschen and Gregory Wathelet whereas Great Britain have just 3 riders in the form of Scott Brash, Joe Clee and Michael Whitaker.
Germany on the other hand mean business and have sent to Switzerland the kaiser Ludger Beerbaum (who is closing in on the Longines ranking list leader Scott Brash), FEI World Cup title holder Daniel Deusser, along with German stars Marcus Ehning and Christian Ahlmann, Marco Kutscher and Hans-Dieter Dreher as well as the talented young rider David Will.
Ireland, just like Germany, seem intent on laying claim to as many wins as possible and have some excellent riders taking part in Switzerland. Golden boy Bertram Allen, Denis Lynch and Billy Twomey are all aiming for victory while keep an eye out on Holland and their 2 riders Marc Houtzager and Harrie Smolders.
Portugal’s Luciana Diniz meanwhile will be at an event for the first time with her new mount Bogegaardens Apollonia (also known as Apollonia 23) although she is also in Switzerland with 2 other established horses Fit For Fun  and Winningmood. Sweden will be represented by Rolf-Goran Bengtsson and Henrik von Eckermann, Ukraine by Katharina Offel while Reed Kessler will be carrying the hopes of the USA.
As for the hosts, they have decided to field their very best riders such as Pius Schwizer, Paul Estermann, Martin Fuchs and Jane Richard Philips.
Finally, Italy has the rising talent Lorenzo De Luca who is fresh from starting his new experience at the Stephex Stables. Joining him are Piergiorgio Bucci and Emanuele Gaudiano.
