Gianni Guidolin: from agriculture startup to leader in equine nutrition

Gianni Guidolin

The story of Gianni Guidolin is the journey of an entrepreneur who built everything from zero, driven by a clear idea: stay ahead of the market instead of reacting to it. Today Guidolin Gianni is known internationally in the horse nutrition sector, but its origins come from a very different agricultural beginning.

In 1980, Guidolin started by working in grain collection and trade in northern Italy. He bought corn, barley, and oats directly from local farmers. To manage post-harvest storage, he invested in a drying system, necessary to reduce moisture in freshly harvested cereals.

“I started completely from zero. At the beginning I even had just a small box office outside, there was no real structure.”

This early phase was simple but essential: buying raw grains, drying them, and reselling them in the local market.

As the business grew, he moved into international cereal trading. He imported grains from North and South America and sold them across European markets. In many cases, the goods never physically passed through his facilities. They were traded directly at port level. Volumes increased quickly, but so did financial exposure due to extreme volatility in agricultural markets.

At a certain point, he made a decisive shift.

“Before closing everything, I realized it was better to transform the company.”

During his travels, he discovered a cereal flaking plant. That moment changed his direction. Instead of only trading raw commodities, he began focusing on transforming cereals into higher-value animal nutrition products.

He invested in flaking technology and entered a market that was still undeveloped in his region. The initial reaction was weak. Farmers did not immediately accept the added cost of processed cereals. Adoption was slow.

The turning point came when veterinarians and animal nutrition specialists started validating the benefits.

“At the beginning the market did not understand it. Then veterinarians started explaining the results, and everything opened up.”

Demand increased rapidly, and production moved into continuous cycles. The business expanded, but Guidolin was already thinking ahead, aware that every product has a limited life cycle.

This led to a new idea: a complete feed solution that could replace separate purchases of forage, cereals, and feed supplements. A single ready-to-use product for livestock efficiency and simplification.

Since no machinery existed for this type of production, he decided to build it himself.

“I worked for three years to build the machines. Nothing existed, so we created them from scratch.”

From this process, WaferFioc was born, a compact 4×4 cm feed cube made from forage, alfalfa, and flaked cereals. It represented a shift from individual ingredients to complete nutrition solutions.

The first market, dairy cattle, did not respond strongly. The product was seen as too expensive. At that point, Guidolin redirected his strategy toward the equine sector.

“Then I thought about the horse world. And there, a completely new market opened.”

That decision marked a major turning point. The horse industry quickly recognized the value of the product. From a single formula, the company expanded to seven different formulations designed for specific nutritional needs.

From that moment, Guidolin Gianni began to grow into an industrial and international business.

The structure evolved from small operational spaces into a fully developed production site of around 5,000 square meters, including offices, production facilities, and research areas. Storage infrastructure also changed significantly. Two large silos used during the trading era were replaced with eight silos, each with approximately 3,000 tons capacity, allowing a much broader range of raw materials.

“Today, the structure is completely different, because we no longer work with just a few products, but with more than 50 different raw materials, while overseeing every stage of the production process in-house.”

Alongside production growth, research and development became a central pillar. The company built internal laboratories and established scientific collaborations with the University of Padua to develop and test new equine nutrition formulas.

Current projects focus on functional feed designed to support specific horse health conditions. Trials are conducted in selected stables with continuous veterinary monitoring, blood testing, and performance analysis over time.

Every product goes through a long validation process before reaching the market.

“If I don’t have solid results, I don’t put the product on the market.”

This reflects Guidolin’s long-term philosophy. He consistently works with planning horizons of five to ten years, investing early and developing products long before demand becomes visible.

“My idea has always been to think about what will happen in five or ten years.”

Today, Guidolin Gianni continues to expand beyond traditional horse feed into new areas of equine wellness and functional nutrition. The focus remains on developing solutions that support horse health and performance through targeted formulations.

From a small grain trading activity in 1980 to an international equine nutrition company, Gianni Guidolin’s journey is defined by transformation, timing, and the ability to build solutions before the market asks for them.
