William Coleman Takes the Lead After Dressage at the Kentucky Three-Day Event
Lexington (USA) – William Coleman heads the provisional standings in the CCI5*-L at the Defender Kentucky Three-Day Event following the opening day of dressage. Riding Diabolo, the American athlete posted a score of 27.3, despite a minor mistake that incurred a two-point penalty.
For Coleman and the Holsteiner gelding owned by the Diabolo Group, this performance confirms their affinity with the Kentucky Horse Park, where they claimed victory in the CCI4*-S in 2024. The horse’s debut at five-star level proved highly promising, marked by a polished and expressive test.
“The first time you compete at a five-star in an atmosphere like this, you can never be entirely sure how the horse will cope,” Coleman stated. “Diabolo got a little excited, but to his credit he stayed with me and did his job. There are details I would refine, but I truly adore this horse.”
Close behind is fellow American Phillip Dutton aboard Possante (28.1), followed by New Zealand’s Tim Price with Global Quest (29.8). Great Britain’s Harry Meade currently sits fourth with Superstition (30.2).
Dutton expressed satisfaction with his horse’s performance: “It’s quite unusual for a horse making its debut here to come into this arena so composed. He had a small spook early on, but from that point forward he was very good.”
Price also delivered a composed and accurate test, while Meade admitted to some disappointment with the marks received, despite feeling his test had been solid.
The Kentucky Three-Day Event is one of only seven five-star eventing competitions worldwide and stands as the premier fixture in the United States, also serving as the CCI5*-L National Championship*. With over 90,000 spectators expected, the event continues to hold a central role on the international eventing stage.
