The rescue services had to leap into action in Sicily, on Mount Etna, but for once it was not a hiker who was in need, but rather a horse. The incident occurred when a group of hikers, nine people all told, set out from Ragalna for a day’s trek on horseback in the region west of Mount Etna. When they reached the Galvarina Poggio la Caccia, located at 1900 metres above sea level, the horse slipped off the trail due to the copious snow on the track, and was unable o get back up.
The mount, Jamira, was blocked on the slope and was unable to climb back up. The group were therefore forced to call for assistance, and after a four hour struggle, with the help of the Forest guards and the CNSAS volunteers, the horse was finally safe.Jamira survived her ordeal in remarkably good condition, having suffered only minor damage to her hind limbs.
