Yet again, Calgary Stampede Park was full of excitement during the Tenth Anniversary of Royal West. 40 horses returned for Phase II of the $50, 000 SJC Canadian Hunter Derby National Championships to tackle a beautiful and challenging course designed by Peter Holmes of Cowichan Bay, BC. It was an impressive turnaround for Channay Lloyd of Delta BC. After not placing on any of her three horses during Phase I, she rode to both 1st and 4th place during Phase II.

Her seven-year-old gelding, Diallo, was the winning mount today with a well-deserved score of 102. She rode Central Park to a score of 98 to secure the fourth place ribbon.

Rodney Tulloch and Fleetwood are on track to defend or overcome their Silver Medal finish from 2022 after earning 2nd place in todays class with a score 101.

$10, 000 3’0″ Child/Adult/Pre-Green Hunter Championships

Tanya Hardy of Victoria, BC and Furst Crush held down their spot at the top of the leaderboard after laying down a beautiful trip to earn a score of 86. The pair are right currently leading to be on the top step of the podium during the medal presentation tomorrow morning. Only five points separate competitors from second through fourth place, so everything will ride on Phase III’s triple-points opportunity.

$6, 000 Pony Hunter Championship

The pony master, Trinity Hall of Calgary, Alta. took the win in Phase II of the Pony Hunter Championship aboard Tim Bit, owned by Lonnie Moberly, with a score of 82. Phase I winner, Landon Closson and Grey Swan, proved their consistency by picking up second place with a score of 74. Only one point separates the two pairs in the overall standings. We will have to wait to see who will be crowned the Pony Hunter Champion during Phase III tomorrow.
