Christian Kukuk Claims First German Show Jumping Championship Title at LONGINES BALVE OPTIMUM 2026

Christian Kukuk

The 2026 LONGINES BALVE OPTIMUM once again confirmed its status as one of Germany’s premier equestrian events. Despite a week marked by changing weather conditions, including sunshine, wind and rain, around 30,000 spectators attended the show over five days, creating an outstanding atmosphere in both the dressage arena and the show jumping stadium.

The event crowned eight German champions across various disciplines, with the German Show Jumping Championship providing one of the most exciting moments of the week. In the end, reigning Olympic champion Christian Kukuk secured the first national title of his career.

Christian Kukuk Wins German Championship Gold

The battle for the German Show Jumping Championship title could hardly have been more dramatic. After two championship competitions and four demanding rounds, three combinations remained faultless, forcing a jump-off to decide the medals.

The riders competing for the title were Christian Kukuk aboard Akarad Tivoli Z, Marco Kutscher with Cool Fox, and Maximilian Lill riding Casallco’s George PS.

Lill was the first to return to the arena for the decisive jump-off but recorded three rails down. The championship was therefore left to be decided between Kukuk and Kutscher. The Olympic gold medallist kept his composure and produced another flawless round with the ten-year-old Zangersheide gelding Akarad Tivoli Z.

Kutscher, a two-time Olympic team champion and former European champion, needed to take more risks to challenge Kukuk’s time. However, two jumping faults ended his hopes of gold, leaving him with the silver medal while Kukuk celebrated a long-awaited national title.

The victory carried special meaning for Kukuk. His previous German Championship appearance in Balve had come nine years earlier, when he had been leading the competition before losing the title in the final stages. It was also the last championship attended by his mother before her passing.

“As a little boy, I dreamed of becoming German champion. To come back here nine years later and win in front of my wife and our child makes me incredibly proud,” said Kukuk after securing the title.

The final podium of the German Show Jumping Championship was:

  • Gold: Christian KukukAkarad Tivoli Z
  • Silver: Marco KutscherCool Fox
  • Bronze: Maximilian LillCasallco’s George PS

Earlier in the week, Kukuk and Kutscher had already shared victory in the LONGINES OPTIMUM Prize, the second championship qualifier. Both riders delivered double-clear performances and stopped the clock in exactly 59.63 seconds. Tobias Meyer and Caillou finished third ahead of Maximilian Lill.

Regine Mispelkamp Crowned German Para Dressage Champion

The Para Dressage Championships also produced a thrilling contest. Paralympic silver medallist and three-time European champion Regine Mispelkamp claimed the German Para Dressage title in Grades IV-V aboard Highlander Delight’s.

Riding the 14-year-old Dutch gelding by Florencio I, Mispelkamp earned the highest score in the Kür freestyle with 78.333%, securing both the freestyle victory and the overall national title based on the combined results of all three championship tests.

The competition remained extremely close throughout the event, with Helen Schildhauer pushing Mispelkamp all the way. Riding Vulkan Vegas IB, Schildhauer scored 77.675% in the freestyle and ultimately secured the silver medal.

Anna-Lena Niehues and Vive L’Amour completed the podium, finishing third in both the freestyle and the overall championship standings.

The final German Para Dressage Championship Grades IV-V standings were:

  • Gold: Regine MispelkampHighlander Delight’s (225.745%)
  • Silver: Helen SchildhauerVulkan Vegas IB (224.963%)
  • Bronze: Anna-Lena NiehuesVive L’Amour (218.300%)

With packed grandstands, enthusiastic spectators and championship performances across multiple disciplines, the 2026 LONGINES BALVE OPTIMUM once again demonstrated why it is considered one of Germany’s flagship equestrian events.
