Deirdre Reilly and Derryglen Stud, Building Elite Sport Horse Bloodlines in Ireland
Deirdre Reilly has established herself as a leading figure in Irish sport horse breeding through her work at Derryglen Stud. Combining a competitive show jumping career with a focused stallion operation, she has built a reputation for producing and standing high-quality sport horse sires in Ireland. Her approach centers on accessibility, performance, and temperament, key factors that continue to attract breeders both nationally and internationally.
Her journey into stallion management began with a practical goal, to align her passion for show jumping with a sustainable business based in Ireland.
“My interest in working with stallions was sparked when I was looking for a way to combine my love of show jumping with a complementary business idea that could be based out of my home in Ireland. Ireland is a great breeding nation, so I was naturally drawn in that direction. Being an island, it is logistically more complicated and costly to access top sires that are generally standing in mainland Europe. I wanted to bring worldclass standout sires to stand in Ireland at Derryglen Stud, with fresh semen easily accessible within the country.”
A key milestone in her career came with her first stallion, Kafka, who played a central role in both her sporting progression and the foundation of Derryglen Stud.
“My first stallion, Kafka, means the most to be personally because he is the reason that I set up the stud farm, and from a show jumping perspective, he took me from CSI 2* to CSI 5* in a very short space of time. Kafka taught me so much about how to jump big tracks and gave me the confidence to do it on other horses. In the ring, no matter how big the stage, I had complete faith in Kafka. As time passed, Kakfa led me to his sons and daughters, who tend to be very like their father, and are now my top horses.”

At Derryglen Stud, stallion management focuses heavily on temperament, routine, and welfare, all critical elements for success during the breeding season.
“From the outset, I pick only stallions that have a super easy temperament. Being a small girl, this is essential for me. My stallions have a routine and they are clever to separate the different expectations of them, from breeding to riding. Although they are quiet stallions, they are treated with the respect and responsibility of handling a stallion, but recognizing their good nature. The stallions have a wonderful lifestyle with lots of variety of exercise, turnout in the paddocks, grooming and various therapeutic therapies. I feed a fantastic French feed, Reverdy, which gives my stallions all the energy and nutrition that they are require for an intensive breeding season, while also keeping their brains calm and their stomachs healthy.”
Reilly measures success through the performance of her stallions’ offspring, particularly at international level competitions.
“My proudest moment with my stallions comes through seeing the success of their offspring. For Kafka, it was riding his eldest son, Derryglen Othello, clear in the 5* World Cup in Helsinki. For Cocktail, it was watching his eldest son, Ici de la Courcelle, taking bronze in the final of the World Breeding Championships for 7 years old in Lanaken last year.”
With growing recognition comes pressure, especially when managing high-profile stallions and meeting breeder expectations.
“Standing high profile stallions certainly does bring with it pressure. Luckly, I have three very fertile, well-behaved stallions, that enjoy their job! I have a very good team of experienced motivated people around the stallions, which gives me confidence that we can consistently collect, process and send out top quality semen to breeders.”

Her selection process remains disciplined and performance-driven.
“No I couldn’t say that I have. When it comes to stallions, I go for proven bloodlines, established track-record and a temperament that I can happily work with.”
Daily work with stallions and their offspring has given her a clear understanding of genetic influence in sport horse breeding.
“Working closely with the stallions and their off-spring on a daily basis has thought me how strongly influential a sire can be on their off-spring. I recognize clear character traits that are shared between my stallions and their off-spring. The resemblances range from athletic abilities, such as technique and movement, and characteristics, such as calmness and bravery, to mannerisms and habits, such as playful habits and how they like to sleep.”
Looking ahead, Reilly remains focused on long-term impact and global recognition for her breeding program.

“I want my stallions to have a long, healthy, happy life standing at Derryglen Stud. I hope that they leave a legacy of an elite, world-class, globally-recognized and highly sought-after bloodlines, and they will be recognized among the best sires of their generation.”
