José María Larocca Claims Victory in the CSI4* Grand Prix of Bourg-en-Bresse
The CSI4* Grand Prix of Bourg-en-Bresse delivered exactly the kind of spectacle that makes show jumping one of the most thrilling equestrian disciplines in the world. Packed grandstands, a highly technical course, unexpected mistakes and a breathtaking jump-off kept spectators on edge until the very last rider. In the end, it was Argentine rider José María Larocca and Finn Lente who secured a prestigious victory at the renowned Jumping International de Bourg-en-Bresse Ain.
The 1.55m Grand Prix attracted some of the most competitive international riders on the circuit. Designed by course builder Grégory Bodo, the track immediately proved demanding, requiring riders to find the perfect balance between speed, accuracy and control. With 50 combinations at the start, the competition quickly turned into a true test of precision and strategy.
From the very first rounds, it became clear that the course would not forgive mistakes. The opening rider chose to retire, while shortly afterwards Luis Fernandez Gil Fournier completed the track without knocking down a rail but incurred time penalties. It was an early indication of how difficult it would be to produce a clear round within the allowed time.
For several rounds, the crowd waited anxiously for the first faultless performance. Swiss rider Romain Duguet came painfully close after producing an excellent round, only to see a rail fall at the final obstacle. The audience’s anticipation continued to build until French rider Romain Dreyfus, aboard Channah Z, finally delivered the first clear round of the class as the thirteenth starter. The home crowd erupted in applause, fully aware of the challenge posed by the track.
From that moment onward, the competition truly came alive. Several top contenders secured their place in the jump-off, including the exceptionally fast Julien Épaillard with Le Coultre de Muze, Cédric Hurel, Charlotte Leoni, Belgian rider Gudrun Patteet, Andres Vereecke and Dutch rider Thijmen Vos. Local hopes were particularly high for French rider Mégane Moissonnier, winner of last year’s edition. Riding Crooner Tame, she produced a brilliant clear round that sparked a standing ovation from the Bourg-en-Bresse crowd.
In total, twelve combinations qualified for the decisive jump-off, setting the stage for a dramatic final showdown. Romain Dreyfus, first to return, immediately raised the pressure with a fast double clear. Shortly afterwards, Julien Épaillard attempted his trademark aggressive lines, but a fault at the double eliminated his chances of victory.
Mégane Moissonnier also managed to leave every rail intact in the jump-off, although her time ultimately placed her just outside the podium positions. Nevertheless, her fourth-place finish was warmly celebrated by the home audience.
The winning performance eventually came from José María Larocca. The Argentine rider approached the jump-off with remarkable composure, opting for efficient lines while maintaining an excellent rhythm throughout the course. Finn Lente responded perfectly, showing athleticism, carefulness and responsiveness at every key moment. Their flawless and lightning-fast performance secured the best time of the competition and a memorable international victory.
Behind Larocca, Belgian rider Anthony Wellens aboard Quelle Force Van Sappenleen claimed second place, while fellow Belgian Andres Vereecke with Halima Van Het Bonte Hof Z completed the podium. The international podium once again highlighted the global appeal and sporting significance of the Jumping International de Bourg-en-Bresse Ain.
Following the prize-giving ceremony, José María Larocca praised the atmosphere created by the French spectators. The Argentine rider explained how special it is to compete in front of such an enthusiastic crowd, emphasising the energy and support felt by riders throughout the weekend.
Events such as this CSI4* Grand Prix perfectly illustrate the modern demands of elite show jumping. Success at this level requires not only talented horses and skilled riders, but also exceptional concentration, tactical intelligence and the ability to make split-second decisions under pressure. It is precisely this combination of athleticism, speed and emotion that continues to make show jumping one of the most captivating disciplines in equestrian sport.
