Niall Talbot: 22 Years Later, Back at the Andalucía Sunshine Tour
Twenty-two years away, a venue that has almost doubled in size, and a team of horses with big ambitions for the future. For Irish show jumper Niall Talbot, returning to the Andalucía Sunshine Tour is an opportunity to revisit familiar surroundings while preparing for the next chapter of his career.
Based in Switzerland, Talbot has built his international career through years of competing across Europe, with established partner FTS ELLIOT and rising star Charming Dream Z among the horses playing important roles in his journey. His recent highlights include a 1.50m Grand Prix victory at Oliva Nova in December 2025 with Charming Dream Z, followed by another Grand Prix win at the same venue in October 2026. More recently, he also claimed the €30,400 Equine America Trophy, a CSI3* 1.45m class, with FTS ELLIOT in October 2026. These results reflect the strength of a team combining experience with ambition.
Now back in Spain, Talbot has a clear objective. He wants to give his horses more experience on grass, particularly in the larger arenas, as he prepares Charming Dream Z to progress from four-star to five-star competition.
We caught up with Niall to talk about returning to the Sunshine Tour after more than two decades, the memories that have stayed with him, and the horses shaping his ambitions for the future.
“Everything is bigger and better”
For Talbot, the return was an immediate reminder of just how much the Sunshine Tour has grown.
“Incredible. I couldn’t believe it. The place was already really big the last time, but coming back, it’s almost twice the size as I remember.”
The changes were clear from the moment he arrived. The number of arenas, stables and facilities has increased considerably, transforming the venue into an even bigger destination for international show jumping.
“So many more arenas, stables, restaurants, everything. Everything is bigger and better.”
His memories of the Sunshine Tour go back to a different period in his career, when the competition was an opportunity to prepare his horses for the season ahead. The focus was on bringing both young and experienced horses to Spain, giving them a solid start before moving on to the bigger competitions.
“Last time I was here, we would come and begin our season. We would take all the young horses to start them off, and the older ones, and I think we won some of the young horse finals. That was always nice, and a great way to start our first Grand Prix of the year.”
Those early experiences are part of what makes this return special. Although the venue has changed, the purpose of bringing horses to Spain to develop and prepare for the season remains familiar.
A return with a clear purpose
So, what brings Talbot back after 22 years?
This time, his decision is closely linked to the horses he has in his stable and the experience he wants them to gain.
“I have some really nice horses, and I wanted to get them down here and expose them to the great grass arenas here, especially. That was the big thing for us because we don’t get to jump on grass so often.”
With many competitions now taking place on artificial surfaces, opportunities to gain experience on grass can be particularly valuable when preparing horses for larger international shows.
“We often jump on artificial surfaces, so we thought that it would be a good idea to come down here and jump some of the bigger rings on grass with them.”
The Sunshine Tour offers Talbot the chance to work on that experience while competing in an environment he already knows. For his horses, the aim is to build confidence and familiarity with the conditions they may encounter at future events.
Charming Dream Z and the step towards five-star competition
Among Talbot’s current horses, Charming Dream Z stands out as the one carrying his biggest ambitions for the coming season.
The pair have already demonstrated their potential at international level. In December 2025, they won the 1.50m Grand Prix at Oliva Nova, stopping the clock at 39.40 seconds in the jump-off. In October 2026, they returned to the winner’s circle with victory in the 1.45m Grand Prix at the Autumn Mediterranean Equestrian Tour, finishing the jump-off in 35.49 seconds.
Those results provide a strong foundation as Talbot looks towards the next stage of their partnership.
“My number one horse is Charming Dream. He’s the main reason we came down here.”
The plan is to build on the experience they have gained at four-star level and prepare for more demanding competitions.
“He’s been starting now at the four-star level, and we’d like to move him up to the five-star level next year. Hopefully, get to do some of the bigger five-star shows.”
The opportunity to jump in the Sunshine Tour’s larger grass arenas is an important part of that preparation. Talbot wants to give Charming Dream Z the experience needed to take on new challenges while continuing to develop as a combination.

FTS ELLIOT, a partnership built over 12 years
While Charming Dream Z represents the future, FTS ELLIOT remains an important part of Talbot’s present.
The 17-year-old horse has been with the Irish rider since he was five, giving them 12 years together. Throughout that time, FTS ELLIOT has remained a reliable partner, continuing to compete and win at international level.
When asked to identify one of the biggest highlights of his career, Talbot found it difficult to choose just one.
“There have been a lot, and I’m lucky that I’ve had some really nice horses through the years.”
For him, the quality of the horses he has ridden has been central to his career. And while he is excited about what lies ahead with Charming Dream Z, he is equally appreciative of the horse that has been with him for so many years.
“Luckily, I think I have the best horse I’ve ever had now, with Charming Dream. This guy is also very special. This is FTS ELLIOT. He’s been a great horse for us. We’ve had him since he was five years old. He’s now 17, but he’s won the Grand Prix this year.”
FTS ELLIOT’s recent results underline that he is still very much competitive. In October 2026, the pair won the Equine America Trophy, a CSI3* 1.45m class at Oliva Nova, delivering two clear rounds and winning the jump-off in 35.67 seconds.
Talbot also mentioned another recent ranking-class victory, further demonstrating that the experienced horse continues to deliver results.
Looking ahead
For Talbot, returning to the Andalucía Sunshine Tour is about combining experience with preparation for the future. The venue brings back memories of the early stages of his career, while his current team gives him plenty to look forward to.
With Charming Dream Z progressing towards five-star competition and FTS ELLIOT continuing to perform at 17, Talbot has clear objectives for the coming season.
His return after 22 years also reflects how much the Sunshine Tour itself has developed. The larger facilities and extensive range of arenas provide an opportunity to prepare horses for the demands of international competition.
Asked about his return, Talbot’s description of the venue was simple: “Everything is bigger and better.”
And while much has changed since his last visit, his focus remains the same: developing his horses, making the most of the opportunities available and continuing to compete at the highest possible level.
