Spruce Meadows Canada Masters next big event after WEG

With the World Equestrian Games now over the remaining events of the season take centre stage once again. The biggest event to keep an eye on is the CSIO5* Calgary, in Spruce Meadows. The competitions of the Canadian Masters start today even though the weather is less than ideal with snow covering much of the ground. The first event is the Telus Cup 1.50m at 1pm and that will be followed by the Finning Cup 1.60m.
Within the context of the masters there will also be some breeding events held by the likes of the Hannover studbook (September 11th) and the Telus Battle of the Breeds (Friday September 12th) while on Saturday 13th will be the turn of the BMO Nations’ Cup starting at 2pm with a prixe money of 300000 dollars.
There will be some extremely important riders taking part. 112 horses have been signed up for Calgary, one of which is the winner of the Aachen GP 2014, Codex One, along with his rider Christian Ahlmann who will also be accompanied by Aragon Z and Cornado II. Germany will also have Philipp Weishaupt (Calido 2, Carinou), Marco Kutshcer (Van Gogh & Liberty Son2), Daniel Deusser (Fyloe vh Claeyssenhof) and Andre Thieme.
Ireland will also be very competetive with riders Shane Breen, Dermott Lennon, Billy Twomey and Conor Swail as will the British team (Michael, William and Robert Whitaker and Guy Williams), France (Kevin Staut with Oh d’Eole, Penelope Leprevost with Mylord Carthago HN, Jerome Hurel, Marie Hecart and Cedric Angot).
Holland will also be there with Marc Houtzager (Sterrehof’s Uppity) and Frank Schuttert (Winchester HS and Arc de Triomphe) while Belgium will represented by the Philippaerts family (Ludo, Nicola and Olivier) alongside Pieter Devos.
Italy will be represented by Lucia Vizzini who will be riding Romie and Loro Piana Once de Kreisker while the home side will be competing with Ian Millar (Dixson), Eric Lamaze (Showgirl and Powerplay), Tiffany Foster (Triplle XIII), Yann Candele and Ben Asselin while their neighbours, the USA, will try their luck with bronze medal winner from the World Championships Beezie Madden (Simon, Coral Reef Via Volo), Lauren Hough (Ohlala & Quick Study), Reed Kessler (Cylana, Cos I Can) and Kent Farrington (Uceko & Blue Angel).
